Sundarampillai was the eldest son of Mr & Mrs. Vellupillai born in Vaddukoddai, Jaffna, Sri Lanka on 19 April 1928. He was educated at Vaddukotai Hindu College and later attended his senior school at Jaffna Hindu College. He then worked in his father’s family timber yard business. Sundarampillai later followed in his father’s footsteps and at the age of 32 started his own timber yard business in Hospital Road, Jaffna - later becoming a successful distributor and timber merchant in the Northern region of Sri Lanka. He subsequently developed his own saw mill and furniture manufacturing unit and became sole agent in Sri Lanka for a well known European brand of woodworking machinery manufacturer. He was the first entrepreneur in the northern district to have brought skilled labour from the Southern region of Sri Lanka. He also opened retail trading in the name of “GANESHANANDA STORES” selling various household goods and his own branded furniture. Sundarampillai was a philanthropist, using his business success to support many religious establishments and charitable causes to help the needy in the north of Sri Lanka. He sold his business due to the outbreak of the war and came to live in the United Kingdom in 1995. After a short spell in Wales, he preferred to live in East London nearer Hindu Temples and to devote his retirement to religious duties. He celebrated his 60th wedding anniversary with his wife, children, grandchildren and other family members and friends on 23 May 2009. Sundarampillai suffered a series of minor heart failures and departed this earth on 14 May 2010 leaving his grieving widow Maheswary and children Navaratnarajah (Sabrina), Sivaneswary (Sivapalan), Ganeshwary (Bashir), Puvaneswary (Charith) and grandchildren Anusha & Sheela, Ragu, Janani & Babu and Ashok; his sister Manonmani (Balasingham) and many nephews & nieces as well as many friends scattered throughout the World.
